Care of the Elderly

It is expected that there will be 20 million people over the age of 65 by 2030 (College of Occupational Therapists 2015). As we get older, we are more likely to suffer from a variety of medical conditions. These conditions can in turn affect how we manage our daily activities.

Occupational Therapists can assist people to all ages to remain as independent as possible for as long as possible by:

  • assessing an individual’s function
  • looking at the activities they need/want to do every day
  • assess the environment in which these activities are carried out (usually your home environment)
  • provide advice and support on how to carry out your daily activities safely and independently
  • provide advice on equipment/aids that may assist with independence and safety
  • assist with ordering and fitting such equipment (as required)

Sometimes a rehabilitation programme may enable the individual to regain independence or give them time to learn how to use a new piece of equipment.
