Reminiscence therapy & Dementia Care

I found this beautiful video clip online today and really wanted to share it.

It is believed that there are approx 44.4 million people worldwide living with dementia (850,000 people in the UK). This number is expected to reach 75.6 million worldwide by 2030.

There comes a point in most dementia sufferer’sĀ ‘journey’ when they struggle to find their place in the world. Even when surrounded by their family and their home, things can feel very unfamiliar and frightening. Reminiscence therapy is a useful tool which involves talking about familiar objects/events/life experiences/music etc from the past. It enables the individualĀ to reconnect with what is familiar to them. While it doesn’t change their condition or the disease itself, it can have a positive effect on mood and behaviour.

Have a look at this link below. This care home in the Pennsylvania, USA has recreated rooms within the home to replicate homes from the 1940s. The decor, furniture, music etc is based on the that era. This enables their residents to feel comfortable and familiar in their surroundings and from the comments in the video, it has had a very positive effect indeed.
